CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte 49ers baseball head baseball coach Loren Hibbs has hired former Virginia Tech third baseman Bo Durkac as assistant coach. Durkac's main responsibilities will be in recruiting and as hitting coach.
"I am really excited that Coach Loren Hibbs has hired me out of all of the applicants for the assistant coaching position," Durkac said. "I am greatly indebted to him for taking a chance on me. I will certainly do everything in my power to help the Charlotte baseball program succeed."
Durkac finished his professional baseball career with Sonoma County of the Western Baseball League last summer. Before that he played with the Taichung Agan in the Taiwan Major Leagues last spring. Before playing in Taiwan, he played three seasons in the Western Baseball league for Sonoma County (CA.) and Chico (CA.). Durkac was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system in the California League from 1996-97. In 1995, he spent his first pro season with the Adirondack Lumberjacks in the Northeast Independent League.
Before his professional career, Durkac was a two-time All-Metro Conference third baseman at Virginia Tech from 1993-95. During his three seasons at Virginia Tech, he hit .360 with a school-record 60 doubles. He was an ironman since he played all but two innings in his final two collegiate seasons. In 1993, he was the Metro Conference Newcomer of the Year after leading the league in hitting at .423. He played his freshman season at North Carolina.
The Kittanning, Pa., native graduated with a liberal arts and sciences degree from Virginia Tech in 1995. He has authored one book on baseball with a second book on the way and has contributed a semimonthly column in Baseball America for two years.
"We are really excited about having Bo Durkac join our coaching staff," Hibbs said. "Bo is a very hard working guy who brings a great deal of knowledge about baseball and particularly hitting to our program."
